Product Description
The Essick Air 4DTS 300 is designed to humidify an entire house-up to 2,700 square feet. Using an evaporative system and unheated, natural, evaporated water, this humidifier requires less energy than warm mist or steam units. You also won't have to deal with white dust, spray, or mist on furniture or floors. Other benefits of the evaporative system include: relief from symptoms of dry skin, itchy eyes, chapped lips and scratchy throat; it prevents plants and furniture from becoming overly dry; and reduced static electricity protects computers and electronics. This humidifier's water bottle holds 5.5 gallons and disperses up to 13 gallons of water per day, refilling easily and neatly in the sink via an included hose. Cleaning the rest of the appliance is just as simple: the power unit lifts off the top of the humidifier for easy cleaning and servicing, while the evaporative wick, which filters out mineral deposits, also lifts out for replacing. Essick's offers analog controls and a digital readout that provide easy operation and worry-free monitoring of the unit's status as this model will automatically turn itself on and off to maintain the chosen humidity level. In addition, the humidifier's fan offers 9 variable speed settings. This humidifier measures 21-1/2 by 14 by 17 Inches, with casters on the bottom for easy rolling from room to room. Essick's covers this unit under a 2-year on motor/1-year components warranty (Less wicks and filters). Contemporary style and full-size performance in a midsize humidifier. Great Humidifier! Exactly as advertised!
By Bravocommand
I live in Arizona so it is hot and dry in the summer and cold and dry in the winter. I researched large home humidifiers and settled on this Essick Air 4DTS 300 digital. My experience with this unit so far has been excellent. As of this writing, June 17, 2013, the unit has totally met my expectations. It puts a ton of humidity into the air and makes the whole house feel cooler and more comfortable. I fill the two internal bottles everyday. I feel like the unit is working when the bottles are dry. That's exactly what I want... water in the air. The unit is easy to set up and easy to operate. On a medium setting the unit is very quiet. I really have to listen to hear it running. The cabinet is light weight due to the fact that is all plastic. There is really no need to make a big heavy humidifier in my opinion. The benefit of a lighter cabinet is it is easy to move around. When the bottles are full the unit seems to feel more substantial due to the water weight. The wood front is cheesy but who cares(you can always paint over it)? I think the whole unit looks good and fits right into our décor. The digital controls are easy to operate. I ordered an extra wick, air filter, and bottle of bactericide. I plan on changing the wick every six months or so... if it needs it or not.
When the unit shuts off I know it is out of water (runs about 24 hours on 10 gallons which is both bottles 2x5). During the day I may check the bottles and if I find an empty one I may do a quick refill. When the bottles are empty I take them into my garage to the sink which bypasses my water softener. I put in one tablespoon (maybe a little less) of bactericide (I like the Essick bactericide that comes with the unit) into each bottle and fill each up about two inches from the top... then back in the unit they go (takes about 4 minutes). I run the unit at a setting of 45 and that puts my 2500 sq. ft. homes interior at around 36% humidity which is comfortable.
In my opinion, this humidifier is worth every penny of $185. I works exactly as advertised. I don't have one complaint (which is unusual). Buy with confidence!

Not Enough Humidity To Ignore the NOISE
By Chicago Music Fan
This review is actually for the 4DTS 900 (gray) model (that I don't see listed on Amazon), which is the same except for the exterior gray color on my unit. So I bought this unit on Christmas Eve last week and it has been running for a week. On the good side, I unpacked it and set it up relatively easily with the help of the quick set-up guide and manual. I like the lightweight plastic material that is used, because it gets a lot heavier once you add the water bottles. The bottles were easy to fill with the supplied hose and the handles make them easier to carry. The bottle caps do need to be carefully screwed on to prevent cross-threading, but it's not impossible at all. The air filter fit loosely on the back, but again, not a big issue. I was satisfied overall with the controls of the unit, except the built-in humidistat reads at least 10% higher than the hygrometers that I already had. Even so, still not a big problem because I just calibrate it to my hygrometers, knowing I have to set the humidifier 10% higher to get my desired humidity. Fine. NOW, my complaints...
We have a 2-story 1300 SF house, and I keep the unit in the upstairs hall immediately outside of the bedrooms - where I want the humidity the most. I already had 2 hygrometers - 1 in my bedroom and 1 in another bedroom I use as an office - that were each reading about 25% relative humidity or less before we got the humidifier. So I turned the unit on and thought it wasn't TOO loud at the second lowest setting (F2), it just had a droning hum that has since been ringing in my ears. But in order to maintain a consistent RH reading in my house, it needs to run full blast (F9), and then it sounds like I'm on an airport runway, it's so loud! That consistent reading has only maxed out at about 38% (on my hygrometers) at F9, and that is just 10'-15' from the unit so I don't know how this thing is supposed to humidify a 2700 SF house as the specs say. I have usually kept the fan at about F4 or so, but then the RH only hovers around 32% or so, which is better than 25% but not good enough for what I want it to do. Needless to say it's hard to sleep in peace with this thing, and I don't see an improvement if I move it downstairs because it would definitely need to run full blast but it wouldn't even achieve 38% RH in my bedrooms from down there since it would be farther away. Plus, we would still hear it from downstairs because I hear it in its current location when I am downstairs and its on F9. So I am pretty sure I will send it back by the end of the week.
In fairness, I think (and I could be wrong) that its less a problem with the unit itself, but more with the nature of evaporative humidifiers in that they have to blow air through the saturated wick to send evaporated water (and not water droplets like other humidifier types) into the air. So the fan really has to work if you want to increase the RH in an entire house like this unit is supposed to. I believe the other types tend to emit the white residue into the air, but I think even they have at least a small issue with fan noise. Still, SOMEBODY out there has solved the fan noise problem with whole-house evaporative humidifiers, I just have to find the right unit, because this ain't it!! So I can't recommend this unit, mainly because of the incredible amount of noise, which is necessary to get even close to the RH you will probably desire in your space.
