4Excellent Product
By Skydog
I bought the Generalaire unit over Honeywell or Aprilaire since it comes with the best humidistat by far. The E2 humidistat has an outdoor temp monitor so it can calculate the dew point as the weather changes. This is very important if you live in the northern part of the country where temps change daily. The instructions are reasonably good. If there is anything you don't understand or need their customer service line is top-notch. I called twice and had my questions answered right away.

The installation is fairly easy. They say you can use hot or cold water but I recommend to only use hot water as this will give much better evaporation and won't cool down the hot air which forces your furnace to fire longer.

Two issues I had with it. One was that the collar on the outlet of the solenoid was not tightened at all. This allowed water to leak until I tightened it up myself - but this should have been done at the factory. Other issue is that the fan is somewhat loud when it is running. Not terribly noisy but I can definately hear that the unit is on even from a distance. But other brands might be just as loud - I don't know.

This unit has alot of advantages like a 10 year warrranty so I heartily can recommend it.

5Well made and works well
By Tommy Mac
I installed this humidifier after my HVAC system had to be replaced due to Sandy.

I have a down flow system so I installed the humidifier in the AC coil section of the furnace. I installed the humidistat in the return duct to minimize the wiring to the humidifier. It is connected through a relay on the furnace control board so it only runs when it's called to. I ran a hot water line to the humidifier for better vaporization. My furnace is in the garage next to my hot water heater so this also simplified things. The thermocouple wire for the humidistat was run through a drilled hole in a door frame to reach outside. The hardest part (which was easy) was cutting the opening for the humidifier in the furnace panel. I used a jigsaw with a sheet metal blade. The provided template made this very easy to lay out and cut.

I have a separate inside humidity/dew point meter on a Ambient Weather weather station display inside the house. The humidity increased as it should, when it should. The product seems to work great, keeping the interior quite comfortable on dry days in the winter. Can't beat a 10 year warranty either

4Works well. Difficult to install. Some tips on wiring.
By David P. Brown
Unit works well but I found it difficult to install. I would not recommend doing this yourself unless you are good at metal work, wiring, and plumbing. I would recommend you measure carefully before ordering as this unit is fairly large and it only fit in one very tight spot on my furnace. I had to do all the cutting by hand as it was so close to the AC coils. However, once installed it has worked just fine including the other comments about the superior humidistat. I am using the hot water option, and it works well in a 40 year old house.

One of the most confusing things is the electrical wiring since there are multiple diagrams in the instructions. One thing I found is that new furnaces come with a switched humidifier output line. Before buying, remove the door to the electrical panel of your furnace. There should be a wiring diagram inside. Look for a connection labeled "HUM". This should be a black wire. This is a 120V switched output for a powered humidifier. You can run this wire to an external box and connect to the hot side "gold screws" of an outlet. Find the input AC line coming into your furnace and run over the white "common" wire and connect to the silver screws and a ground wire to the green screw. This will automatically turn on the water and powered fan when the furnace cycles on and off.

The other issue is the 28V AC power supply you will need for humidistat. There are two red wire on the humidifier unit that supply 28V AC power. However, this will only work if you order the optional relay as part of your wiring hookup. If you use any of the other wiring hookups that use a switched 120V option to the humidifier unit, there will be no power to the humidistat unless the 120V is switched on. Fortunately, thermostats also use 28V AC power so you can get a constant 28V AC supply off the thermostat output of the furnace. You should also be able to find these on the wiring diagram for the furnace. For mine, it was a red wire hooked to terminal R for hot and a green wire hooked to terminal G for common. I would use a multimeter to check your outputs to make sure they are a 28V AC supply before hooking to power the humidistat.

Maximum Coverage Area
Maximum coverage area means this humidifier will perform well for home sizes up to the square footage indicated, provided that the home is tight . A "tight" home is typically is one that is sealed well around windows and doors and does not leak air to/from the outdoors. Note that humidifiers will perform well for smaller homes as well since the controller regulates the amount of humidity automatically to adjust to home size.
